Ubuntu 12.04 – Precise Pangolin (LTS) was released on 26th April, 2012 & finally after 5 long years it is reaching to it’s end of life on 28th April, 2017.
When an OS release reaches its “end of life” it means that the release will not receives any further updates, including critical security upgrades/patches. It is highly recommend that you upgrade your release to a recent version of Ubuntu.
I am running Ubuntu 12.04, what should I do?
If you’re still running Ubuntu 12.04 then we suggest that you immediately update your OS to a latest version preferably Ubuntu 14.04 or Ubuntu 16.04.
Please note that you cannot update your Ubuntu 12.04 to Ubuntu 16.04 directly, it does not work like that. You will have to update your release to Ubuntu 14.04 first & later you can update it to Ubuntu 16.04. Which means you’re good for another 4 years as it’s end of life is 2021.
Conclusion:
It is highly recommended that you update your OS release to a latest version, i.e Ubuntu 14.04 or Ubuntu 16.04.
